The glamorous Canadian singer, actress, songwriter, dancer and model, Denise Katrina Matthews, popularly known as Vanity had a tough childhood, abandoned by her mother and was left to suffer with her abusive father. As she grew, she tried to build a career in the field of modeling and acting. She acted in some b-grade movies using a stage name, D.D. Winters. With the trio group, Vanity 6 she became popular.
The 1959 born singer was the daughter of James Levia Matthews, who was an African American and Helga Senyk who German born. The Miss Niagara Hospitality and Miss Canada title holder started her career in modeling at the age of seventeen. She did a lot of commercials including Pearl Drops toothpaste. She also posed for the Playboy magazine, twice. She was also the cover model for “R&B”, “funk” and “Aligator Woman”.
Her meeting with Prince led to the music career of hers. He asked her to be the lead singer of the Vanity 6 trio group. Nasty Girl was the biggest hit of the group. The group broke up by 1983. In 1984, she signed a deal with Motown Records. Wild Animals and Skin on Skin were her solo albums. She went on to sign a deal with A&M Records and recorded a soundtrack for movie, Action Jackson produced by Jesse Johnson, her friend and former member of The Time.
Vanity as an actor acted in a horror movie named, Terror Train, she had a small role there. She also did some B-grade movies like, Tanya’s Island. Her other movies include, The Last Dragon, Never Too Young to Die, 52- Pick-Up. Her most important character was in the movie, Action Jackson. She did some appearances on TV shows. On February 15, 2016, she died due to renal failure.
